At-a-glance

Step into nature and contribute to the UAE’s environmental legacy. In this outdoor CSR activity, your team will plant the iconic native Ghaf tree, the UAE’s national tree, while learning about sustainability, climate resilience, and the region’s unique ecosystem.

The activity takes place within one of Dubai’s leading environmental research and sustainable agriculture environments in the Academic City area, close to the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. Participants will explore active field experiments focused on sustainable agriculture, soil rehabilitation, biodiversity, and climate adaptation before taking part in planting native species that will continue to grow long after the activity ends.

The experience is completed with a creative takeaway element, allowing participants to learn about water scarcity and security, enabling them to take the impact back home by planting a seedling in their garden or home.

Why this activity exists

The UAE’s environment presents unique challenges, from water scarcity to soil degradation and desertification. Over time, these factors reduce the land’s ability to support plant life, agriculture, and biodiversity.

Tree planting plays a key role in addressing these challenges. Native trees like the Ghaf are especially valuable; they are highly adapted to the local climate, help stabilise soil, improve land quality, and support surrounding ecosystems. They also contribute to carbon sequestration and long-term environmental sustainability.

By taking part, your team contributes to something much bigger than a single planting session. You are supporting long-term environmental restoration, while gaining a deeper understanding of how ecosystems function in the UAE.

Why did we build it this way?

Through years of delivering environmental initiatives, we realised that many tree-planting activities focus solely on putting a sapling in the ground. While well-intentioned, this often leaves participants with little understanding of why the species was chosen, the challenges involved in restoring ecosystems, or what happens after the event ends.

That is why this experience takes place within a working research and agricultural environment where participants can learn directly about the role native trees play in the UAE’s ecosystem. Before planting begins, teams gain insight into the environmental challenges facing the region, the importance of biodiversity, and the science behind successful restoration projects.

We chose the Ghaf tree because it is one of the UAE’s most important native species, valued for its resilience, ecological benefits, and cultural significance. The result is an activity that combines hands-on action with environmental education, helping participants understand not only what they are doing, but why it matters.

How the session runs

The activity is led by sustainability experts and Companies for Good trained facilitators alongside on-site research staff who create an engaging and informative experience from start to finish.

The session begins with a short welcome and introduction to the UAE’s unique environmental landscape, helping participants understand some of the challenges facing the region, including water scarcity, soil degradation, and desertification. Teams are also introduced to the Ghaf tree and its important role within local ecosystems.

Participants then take part in a guided tour of the research and agricultural site, where they gain first-hand insight into ongoing sustainability initiatives, environmental research, and innovative approaches to agriculture in arid environments. Along the way, teams explore different soil types found across the UAE and learn how scientists and environmental specialists are working to address real-world environmental challenges.

Following the tour, participants move to the planting area where they receive practical guidance on how to plant native Ghaf tree seedlings correctly. Working together, teams plant trees in prepared plots, contributing directly to long-term environmental restoration efforts while gaining a greater appreciation for the work involved in nurturing healthy ecosystems.

The session concludes with a creative sustainability activity using natural or recycled materials, giving participants an opportunity to reflect on the experience in a more personal and hands-on way.

Participants leave with more than just the satisfaction of planting a tree. They gain a deeper understanding of the environmental challenges facing the UAE, a stronger connection to the natural world around them, and the knowledge that the trees they planted will continue to grow and contribute to the environment for years to come.

Real outcomes for your team and your people

For your organisation

Most of us don’t often think about where our food comes from, how soil works, or what it takes to sustain life in a desert environment. This activity brings those questions to life in a practical, hands-on way.

Out in the field, your team steps away from the usual office setting and into a completely different environment. There are no departments or job titles, just people working together, learning something new and contributing to a shared goal. Planting trees and exploring the site naturally encourages conversation and connection.

Because the experience combines learning with action, it stays with people. It’s about understanding why it matters. That creates a stronger sense of purpose, reinforces sustainability values, and leaves teams feeling more aligned with the bigger picture.

For individual participants

Spending time outdoors, away from screens and daily pressures, has a noticeable effect on how people feel. The combination of fresh air, light physical activity, and a slower pace helps reduce stress and clear the mind.

At the same time, there’s something grounding about planting a tree. It’s a simple act, but one that represents long-term impact. Participants often walk away with a sense of perspective, knowing they’ve contributed to something that will continue to grow over time.

And there’s that natural “feel good” factor. People leave feeling more positive, more connected, and with a sense that their time was spent on something worthwhile.

Aligned with global goals and the UAE's vision

UN SDG Alignment

The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to create a better and more sustainable future by addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and access to education. This activity contributes the following Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG 13

Climate Action

SDG 15

Life on Land

SDG 2

Zero Hunger

SDG 17

Partnerships for the Goals

By planting native trees such as the Ghaf, your company contributes directly to climate action. Trees absorb and store carbon dioxide over time, helping mitigate the effects of climate change while improving air quality.

This initiative also supports life on land by restoring ecosystems and improving soil health. In environments affected by desertification and salinity, tree planting plays a key role in stabilising the soil, increasing biodiversity, and creating conditions where plant life can thrive.

Through its connection to agroforestry, the activity also contributes to food security. Healthier soil and more resilient ecosystems support sustainable agriculture, helping communities adapt to challenging environmental conditions and maintain long-term productivity.

UAE Vision 2030 Alignment

The UAE Vision 2030 places strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, food security, and responsible use of natural resources. Through initiatives such as the UAE Green Agenda 2030 and the Net Zero by 2050 strategy, the country continues to invest in solutions that protect ecosystems and build long-term resilience in the face of climate change.

The Ghafhaf tree planting activity aligns directly with those priorities by contributing to land restoration and sustainable agriculture. Planting native species such as the Ghaf tree connects closely with national efforts to combat desertification and promote climate-smart agriculture.

The initiative also reflects the UAE’s focus on food security and innovation in agriculture, recognising that sustainable land use is essential for future generations. As further emphasised by UAE leadership: “Sustainability has been a fundamental principle in the United Arab Emirates since its unification.” Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan

By taking part in this activity, your team contributes to these national priorities, supporting environmental protection and long-term resilience, while playing a small but meaningful role in the UAE’s broader sustainability journey.

Lasting community impact

Companies for Good was created to help businesses make a positive impact for society, employees, and the wider community. This initiative reflects that mission by giving companies the opportunity to contribute directly to environmental restoration in the UAE. The landscapes where this activity takes place are part of ongoing research and rehabilitation efforts focused on improving soil quality, restoring biodiversity, and building more resilient ecosystems. In environments affected by salinity and water scarcity, every tree planted plays an important role.

They are planted in prepared areas with irrigation and are maintained over time. This ensures they have a strong chance of survival and long-term impact.

Since launching this initiative in early 2024, more than 50 organisations have offered their time and resources to plant 2,358 new Ghaf trees as part of this program. What makes this activity especially meaningful is that the impact continues long after the day itself. The trees are planted in prepared, irrigated plots and maintained over time, ensuring they have the best chance to grow and contribute to the ecosystem for years to come.

What your team contributes may seem small at the moment, but collectively it becomes part of a much larger effort to restore land, support ecosystems, and build a more sustainable future. It is a real, measurable, and lasting impact that your employees can genuinely feel proud of.
