At-a-glance

Create meaningful impact through a hands-on team activity that directly improves the learning environment for children in need. The charity school upgrade initiative gives your team the opportunity to support students from low-income families by helping refresh and restore a non-profit institution that has been serving the community since 1973 that we partner with (actual school name withheld in line with our student-privacy policy).

Working together in small groups, participants will help repaint classrooms and selected school areas, giving tired, worn spaces a much-needed refresh. With paint, rollers, gloves, masking tape, and all materials provided, your team will literally help create brighter, more welcoming spaces where children can learn, grow, and feel inspired.

The paints are water-based and soluble, VOC-compliant, non toxic, lead-free and certified child-safe.

Why this activity exists

For many children, school is more than a place to learn. It is where they spend most of their day, build friendships, develop confidence, and begin shaping their future.

Yet not every school has access to the same resources. Across the UAE, there are schools and learning centres serving underprivileged communities that operate with limited budgets, often forcing administrators to prioritise essential educational needs over improvements to the learning environment itself.

Over time, classrooms become worn, walls fade, outdoor spaces deteriorate, and facilities that should inspire learning begin to feel neglected. While these challenges may seem cosmetic at first glance, the environment in which children learn can have a significant impact on motivation, wellbeing, and engagement.

What makes this experience particularly powerful is that the impact is immediate and visible. Participants are not assembling kits or preparing items that will be delivered later. They are physically transforming a learning space that children use every day.

Why did we build it this way?

Through years of working with schools and community organisations, we realised that many institutions need support that goes beyond donations. They need helping hands, fresh ideas, and people willing to contribute their time and energy to improving the spaces where children learn and grow.

That is why this activity focuses on practical, visible upgrades. Depending on the needs of the school, participants may help repaint classrooms, create murals, improve outdoor areas, refurbish facilities, or support other enhancement projects that leave a lasting legacy for students and teachers alike. Participants don’t need any previous technical experience and by limiting the activity to 2 hours, they don’t need to dedicate a full work day to do good.

How the session runs

The activity is led by Companies for Good facilitators with extensive experience delivering CSR and community impact programmes across the UAE. Our team works closely with each school in advance to identify priority areas and ensure that every participant contributes to improvements that will have a meaningful and lasting impact.

The session begins with a short introduction to the school, its students, and the purpose of the project. Participants learn about the role the school plays within the community and the specific improvements that will be completed during the activity.

Following a safety briefing and project overview, participants are divided into teams and assigned to different work areas. Depending on the needs of the school, this may include repainting classrooms, creating murals, refreshing outdoor spaces, assembling furniture, improving recreational areas, or completing other enhancement projects identified in advance.

No prior experience is required. All materials, equipment, and guidance are provided, and our facilitators are on hand throughout the activity to support participants and ensure that everyone can contribute confidently.

The session is scheduled outside of class hours, so there will not be any children present during the activity. Any imagery is handled under our child-protection policy in coordination with school leadership.

Real outcomes for your team and your people

For your organisation

Few CSR activities provide such a visible and lasting outcome. By the end of the session, teams can see exactly what they have achieved, whether that is a refreshed classroom, a newly painted mural, an upgraded outdoor space, or an improved learning environment that children will use every day.

In this experience, there are no titles or hierarchies. Employees from different departments and levels of the organisation work side by side towards a shared goal. The hands-on nature of the activity encourages collaboration, communication, and problem-solving in a way that feels natural rather than forced.

Unlike many team-building activities that end when participants leave the venue, the impact of this experience remains long after the day is over. The improvements become part of the school itself, creating a lasting legacy that continues to benefit students, teachers, and the wider community.

The activity also provides a powerful demonstration of your organisation’s commitment to social responsibility. Rather than simply funding a project, employees become directly involved in creating positive change, helping to strengthen company culture while bringing ESG and CSR commitments to life in a tangible and meaningful way.

As companies increasingly seek more meaningful approaches to employee engagement and corporate social responsibility, activities like this offer a rare combination of team building, visible impact, and long-term community benefit.

For individual participants

The activity offers a welcome break from the day-to-day routine, replacing meetings, emails, and screens with a hands-on project that feels purposeful and rewarding. Whether painting, creating murals, improving outdoor areas, or helping revitalise learning spaces, participants are actively contributing to something that will benefit children for years to come.

The experience also creates a stronger connection to the community. By working in a school environment and learning about the challenges some educational institutions face, participants gain a greater appreciation for the importance of creating positive spaces where children can learn, grow, and thrive.

At the same time, the collaborative nature of the activity encourages teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving. Participants often discover new strengths in themselves and their colleagues while working towards a common goal.

Perhaps most importantly, the activity creates a genuine sense of fulfilment. Knowing that your efforts will continue to benefit students long after the day has ended brings a strong sense of purpose and achievement. It is a reminder that even a few hours of collective effort can leave a lasting impact on the lives of others.

L’Oreal

“This year’s L’Oreal Citizen Day reminded me why I love what I do. As part of employee engagement, I get to bring people together for something bigger than all of us: giving back. 1,400 students in a charity school now learn in a fully renovated environment. Seeing our employees show up with heart, empathy and real commitment is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. I would like to thank Companies for Good for organizing this amazing activity for us in the UAE. “

Sustainability and Compliance Alignment

UN SDG Alignment

The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to create a better and more sustainable future for all by addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, education, and community wellbeing. This activity contributes to and strongly aligns with the following Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG 04

Quality Education

SDG 10

Reduced Inequalities

SDG 11

Sustainable cities and communities

SDG 17

Partnerships for the Goals

Your company contributes to reducing inequalities, helping students from low-income households access the same sense of dignity, opportunity, and educational support as their peers. Many of these students come from single-parent households or financially challenging circumstances, yet continue to achieve remarkable academic success.

Schools are at the heart of every community, and improving these spaces creates long-term value not only for students, but for families and future generations.

This initiative reflects the importance of partnerships for social good, bringing together businesses, schools, and communities to create practical, measurable impact through shared responsibility and collective action.

UAE Vision 2030 Alignment

The UAE Vision 2030 places strong emphasis on education as a cornerstone of national development, with government strategies consistently highlighting the importance of building a high-quality, future-ready education system. The UAE National Strategy for Education 2030, launched by the Ministry of Education, aims to equip future generations with the skills, knowledge, and environment needed to contribute to a knowledge-based economy and long-term national growth.

At a broader level, the UAE’s national agenda reinforces that education is one of the most important investments in the country’s future, with a clear focus on creating world-class learning environments and improving student outcomes across all levels.

Lasting community impact

Companies for Good was created to help businesses make a positive impact for society, employees, and the wider community. This initiative reflects that mission by giving companies the opportunity to create visible, meaningful change in a place where it matters deeply.

The charity school where your team will be present is not funded by any major entity and relies heavily on student fees and donations to continue operating. With limited resources prioritised toward education itself, maintenance and facility upgrades often fall behind despite being essential to the student experience.

Since launching this initiative in early 2025, we have already helped upgrade the entire playground area, added soft flooring for safer play spaces, created colourful murals across the school, and repainted approximately 70% of the 55 classrooms with the help of 270 volunteers from 6 different organisations.

The school maintains these improvements after completion, ensuring the impact continues long after the activity itself. The Companies for Good team visits the school every 2 months, allowing us to perform an independent assessment of the improvement works condition.

In the words of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum “Education is the foundation of national development and a key driver of sustainable progress.”

For companies with more flexible CSR budgets, the experience can be further customised to include additional facility improvements such as rubber flooring, murals, playground enhancements, backpack sponsorships, or other meaningful upgrades identified together with the school.

Many of these students come from challenging financial circumstances: single-parent households and families struggling to cover even the most basic school expenses, yet they continue to perform at an exceptional level. Some Grade 12 students rank among the top performers in the UAE, others are athletes and participants in science, cultural, and national competitions where they regularly earn outstanding results. Even with limited facilities, these children continue to excel; imagine how much further they can go with the right environment and support behind them.

What makes this initiative even more meaningful is that approximately 50% of the financial contribution from your activity goes directly back to the school, supporting both the immediate facility upgrades and other essential maintenance needs that cannot be covered through tuition fees alone. Annual transparency reports can be made available on request. It is a real, visible, and lasting impact that your employees can genuinely feel proud of.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, this is one of the most tangible activities we run. Your team walks into a space that needs attention, and within a few hours, you can clearly see the transformation. That makes the impact feel real, not abstract.

It works well for most teams, especially if you’re looking for something active and hands-on. You don’t need any technical skills, just a willingness to get involved. It’s particularly good for teams that want to do something practical together.

We start with a short introduction to the school and the students, so your team understands who they’re supporting. Then we split into smaller groups and assign classrooms or areas. Everything is set up in advance; paint, tools, materials, and our facilitators guide the process. We wrap up with a group reflection once the work is done.

t’s physical, but in a good way. Once people get started, they usually get quite into it. There’s something satisfying about seeing immediate results: a wall painted, a classroom refreshed. It feels productive, not forced.

While your team is giving their time, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes, materials, preparation, logistics, coordination with the school, and making sure everything is safe and properly executed. A large part of the contribution also goes directly toward the school, helping fund upgrades and maintenance that wouldn’t otherwise happen.

You could, but it’s not as simple as it sounds. You’d need to coordinate with the school, source materials, plan the work, manage safety, and make sure the activity is actually useful. We handle all of that so your team can focus on the experience.
